Band Class Offerings

St. Mark's offers a variety of instrumental music classes for middle school and upper school students. Music 5 and 6 are offered as semester classes while band classes are offered the full academic year. Read below for more information.

​Grades 9 - 12

​Music 5 will explore the function of music in our culture. In-class instruction will incorporate hand drums and additional instruments to teach rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, composition, and improvisation. No previous musical experience is required.
​Music 6 explores music history, styles, and theory from the middle ages to present. Students will identify stylistic developments over time and learn basic concepts of music literacy and analysis. The course will incorporate instruments to teach rhythm, melody, harmony, texture, composition, and improvisation.
​Beginning Band is a course of elementary instruction in instrumental music, including musical notation, technical instruction for each instrument, and some simple music theory. Students will have a choice of studying flute, clarinet, trumpet, trombone, or percussion for their beginning year. If a student would like to play a specialty instrument they will use the skills learned from these primary instruments to transfer in their intermediate year. Thirty minutes practice per day is expected. 
​Intermediate Band is a course for students with one year's experience playing a band instrument. Students may choose speciality instruments to learn in this class such as alto or tenor saxophone, french horn, euphonium, or tuba. Class will include working on 8 major scales, sight-reading, technical instruction for their instrument, and music theory. By their last year in intermediate band students are expected to pass a proficiency test of 12 major scales, major intervals of thirds through five flat and five sharp keys, and complete one octave range of chromatic scale. Drummers must play the first 13 rudiments with at least 80% proficiency rating on all rudiments. Thirty minutes practice per day is expected. Prerequisite: Beginning Band or one year prior instrumental experience
​Upper School Band offers advanced instrumental music instruction on band instruments of student's choice. Students will explores several styles of music such as classical, popular, jazz, latin, and rock through their pep band, concert band, and jazz band experience. Performances such as concerts and all home Varsity football games are required during the year. Students are expected to pass a proficiency test of 12 major and minor scales, major intervals of thirds through five flat and five sharp keys, complete two octave range of chromatic scale, and perform a class I, II, or III solo. Drummers must play the first 13 rudiments and 12 major scales on a keyboard instrument using two mallet technique. Students are encouraged to participate in the TPSMEA All-Region auditions. Thirty minutes practice per day is expected. Prerequisite: Two years' experience playing a band instrument or by audition.
